The art of coil pottery is among the oldest crafts, dating as far back as some 2,000 years ago, where clay is fashioned into various forms through coils. Although it provides a flexible and natural way of creation, coil pottery also has its flaws. Knowing the aspects of troubleshooting frequent problems is crucial to improving one’s skills. This article focuses on providing practical tips and solutions to these difficulties — ensuring that potters, regardless of their level of expertise, can improve the quality and durability of finished products.

Cracks and fractures in coil pottery must be addressed through a mix of prevention practices and appropriate repair methods. Misshapen cracking commonly results from unequal drying, where sections of pottery dry at different rates, creating stress that ultimately causes cracks. To prevent this from happening, dry the piece evenly by placing it under a plastic or fabric cover, misting it with water at regular intervals, or placing it in a damp room. Moreover, do not create walls that are too thin, as they are more likely to crack while firing.
